Scissor lifts are invaluable machines in a variety of industries, allowing workers to easily access elevated areas. However, their operation requires strict adherence to safety protocols. This article explores the basic considerations to ensure safe operation of scissor lifts, highlighting the importance of reducing risks and prioritizing worker welfare.
1. Do Not Operate Without Training
Never operate a scissor lift without proper training and certification. Inexperienced operators put themselves and others at risk.
2. Do a Pre-Shift Inspection
Operators should conduct a pre-shift inspection to identify any visible defects or malfunctions in the scissor lift. This includes checking the hydraulic system, electrical components, and verifying that all safety features are functioning properly.
3. Do Not Overload
Exceeding the load capacity of the scissor lift is a dangerous practice that can lead to instability and accidents. Always adhere to the limits specified by the manufacturer.
4. Do Proper Ground Conditions
The scissor lift should be operated on a firm, level surface. If the ground is uneven, use a leveling jack or blocks to stabilize the lift. Try to avoid operating on slopes or inclines.
Before starting the scissor lift, choose a flat ground and open the four supporting legs. If the foundation is soft or undulating, it must be padded with sleepers to ensure that the four legs are on the ground and adjusted smoothly before lifting.
5. Be sure to use anti-fall devices
When working at heights, fall prevention is the most important thing. Workers on the platform should use a personal fall protection system (PFAS) or guardrails to prevent accidents. Properly fixed slings and tethers are an important part of preventing falls.
When working on a scissor lift, no one is allowed to work outside the railing under any circumstances.
6. Effective communication
When operating a scissor lift, maintain clear and continuous communication with ground personnel. Establish clear gestures or verbal prompts to ensure safe operation, especially when maneuvering or lifting.
7. Pay attention to overhead hazards
Be alert to overhead hazards and potential obstacles that may affect the safe operation of the scissor lift. Awareness is the key to preventing accidents. Be aware of dangers at heights, such as beams, pipes, and wires. Make sure the movement of the scissor lift does not endanger workers or equipment above.
8. When the scissor lift is rising, falling, or moving, care should be taken to prevent entanglement of wire ropes, wires, hoses, etc.
9. The scissor lift must not change its direction of operation at will during use, and must not start and stop suddenly; during normal driving, it is prohibited to stop midway. In special circumstances, the platform can be stopped midway.
